Composed in terrifying times during the turbulent period before WW2: Serenade for string orchestra
The Austrian composer Hans Gál (1890-1987) had a successful career right before the start of the second World War: his opera’s were a big success and widely played and in 1928 he won the Columbia Schubert Centenary Prize for his First Symphony. He even got appointed director of the conservatory in Mainz.
But with the rise of the Nazis the luck of the Jewish composer ran out. He had to give up his job at the conservatory and find a safe place to stay. During this period, in 1937, he composed Serenade for String Orchestra Op. 46. One year later Gál moved to Edinburgh in Scotland, where he kept on composing and stayed the rest of his life.

British composer Matthew Locke wrote The Tempest, a 10 piece work in 1667. It was in this piece where Locke used directions such as 'soft' and 'louder by degrees' for the very first time and also added tremolos for strings. very solid. I almost wish it got a bit more romantic and expansive at times but there are also bits you really shouldn't do that, e.g. VW writes "in tempo", so on balance, nice. and great video. the more exposure of this piece the better.
